HYDAC diaphragm accumulators use nitrogen gas to store hydraulic energy, taking advantage of its compressibility. This is necessary because liquids are not compressible and cannot store energy on their own. The diaphragm serves as a barrier between the gas and liquid components of the accumulator.
The diaphragm accumulator works by drawing in fluid from the hydraulic system when the pressure rises, compressing the gas. When the pressure decreases, the stored energy is released back into the system as the gas expands. A poppet valve is also included in the diaphragm to prevent it from being pushed out through the fluid port.
HYDAC produces two types of diaphragm accumulators: welded, which cannot be repaired, and threaded, which can be repaired. These have proven to be effective in various industrial and mobile applications, such as energy storage, pressure maintenance, leak compensation, and vehicle hydraulic systems like brakes and suspension.
